“It is not enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it is not enough to believe in it. One must work at it.”
— Eleanor Roosevelt
Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq – conflicts have become part of our daily global news coverage. So much so that we have become too accustomed to seeing gruesome details of suicide bombings or violent resistance on TV. With the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe countries seek to shut their borders offering more and more nationalistic policies in a hopeless attempt to counter such developments, not realising that such xenophobic rhetoric only fuels those conflicts.
Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a non-profit made up of young people from over 120 countries encouraging members to become responsible citizens and to participate in efforts towards social and economic development.
Seeing the need to raise awareness of the importance of peace even in Europe, 3 years ago JCI London decided to celebrate the UN International Day of Peace with a week’s worth of peace building activities. This year JCI London’s fourth International Peace Conference in collaboration with the JCI Peace Is Possible Campaign will run during JCI Peace Week from 19-26 September 2016 (further info below).
Our vision: To unite stakeholders from all sectors of society toward the mobilisation of young people worldwide to create awareness, advocate, take action and commit to sustainable world peace.

The UN International Day of Peace
When: Wednesday, 21 September 2016
Where: Trafalgar Square, 18:00
Increased awareness of the UN International Day of Peace creates action which can reduce violence and gun crime. In 2008, the UN recorded a 70% reduction of violence in Afghanistan on that day (source: UN Department of Safety and Security).
Our goal is to bring everyone together to celebrate and raise awareness of this day.
A Free Hug Event will therefore take place on Trafalgar Square. This event in the name of Peace and Solidarity will be performed together with other Peace organisations (Peace One Day, JCI’s London2Ghanna and JCI’s Refugees projects amongst others). It is an excellent opportunity to speak about your association and promote your actions about peace in London. Join us!
