OYW Shine A Light | Monthly Panel Series, Episode #2

One Young World Shine a Light Ambassador series highlights the work of Ambassadors in different countries on a particular SDG to bring together young people working towards a common goal, show the work Ambassadors are undertaking and connect young people across different regions.

The panel series takes place once a month and features up to 5 Ambassadors presenting for up to 10 minutes each on their work on one Sustainable Development (SDG). Each panel event shines a light on a specific SDG and what young people globally are doing to take action on those SDGs in their community or regionally.

Lisa Rapley

Australia

In 2016, Lisa co-founded Yuludarla Karulbo, an Indigenous youth and community-led human-centered design platform, which brings Indigenous youth and communities together to share culture with schools and organisations through interactive workshops and technology.

Millicent Barty

Solomon Islands

Millicent is a social entrepreneur from the Solomon Islands as well as Chair of the Young Entrepreneurs Council Solomon Islands. Her core initiative, Millicent Designs offers a communication service to tackle adult illiteracy (17% literate) using structures of traditional oral history to effectively translate development projects to rural communities. Market Basket is a recent social enterprise with a garden-to-door delivery concept. Market Basket is passionate about improving the market experience for local farmers and wider-community providing better access to local produce. YECSI (Young Entrepreneurs Council Solomon Islands) is a membership-driven organisation which supports Young Entrepreneurs with capacity building, skills and mentorship opportunities.

Girish Ananthanarayanan

India

Girish is the founder of Peepul, an education non-profit, that partners with local and state governments to transform public education systems. Their work ranges from developing the pedagogical skills of teachers through a combination of training, coaching, and learning circles, to effecting systemic changes that strengthen the system’s accountability to improve learning outcomes. Through Peepul's programs, not only do they prove that change at scale with quality is possible, they also codify and share their work, so that organizations and governments in other regions can deploy their approach and amplify their impact.

Ayano Sasaki

Japan

Ayano is the leader of MIRACT, a non-profit which provides high school students with progressive career guidance in an innovative manner. The network of young leaders who make up the One Young World Community has also provided an invaluable resource of expertise and information exchange, which has helped Ayano to build the team and its culture. Examples of the work the organisation have carried out include a bi-weekly, online round-table discussion, a regional conference in Kyushu which was attended by 150 participants, and a platform for young people living in said region to share information and mold their community.

Philippines

Loraine is part of the K Network. The K Network believes that education is a fundamental human right which plays a vital role in human, social, and economic transformation. The members of the network, a group of Filipino volunteers, aim to build a more inclusive education system but providing fair access to quality education for young leaders. They envision a world where socioeconomic status does not limit one's pursuit of quality education.
